Veterans' parade in Carrickfergus

A veterans' parade will take place in Carrickfergus tomorrow (Saturday) as Armed Forces Day is marked across the UK.

The parade will move off from St Brides Street car park at 12pm.

It will follow a route through the town centre, where Lord Lieutenant for County Antrim, Joan Christie will take the salute.

The procession will then make its way to the harbour area where it will disperse.

Meanwhile, a number of events are to take place locally to mark the centenary of the Battle of the Somme next Friday (July 1).

Rev Dr Sam Grant will lead a service a 7:15am at Carrickfergus cenotaph, followed by a service at 7:15pm at the same location.

Encouraging local people to get involved, Eddie McKnight from the Carrickfergus branch of the Royal British Legion said the time was significant as it marked “100 years since the infantry battle began at the Somme”.
