Refurbished stand to be named in Tommy's honour at Barn Utd

The family of Tommy Craig, a former chairman and honorary member of the club, will unveil the refurbished stand, named in his memory.

Tommy, who was connected with Barn Utd for over 50 years, died in April. He was 80.

His daughter Sharine, who helped organise the tribute, told the Carrick Times that even in his latter days the venue was seldom far from his thoughts.

She said: “He would always try to get to the home games. Every Saturday he went down to the club if he was able.”

Stressing the project was very much a family effort, Sharine’s son-in-law John Hadden was particularly active in the restoration of benches and with painting.

“Every hour he had off, no lunch, no tea. One day it was 11.00am to 9.55pm,” said Sharine.

The challenge which began mid-July, she explained, included removing litter and bottles. Then with support from Johnstone Decorating Centre, Carrick, seats were restored in the club colours of orange and black with the walls their familiar grey.

Pride of place above the stand, Sharine continued, will be a picture of Tommy and the club crest.

Sharine emphasised: “He would have been over the moon, delighted.”

Originally from the Trooperslane area, Tommy worked in Courtaulds before retiring from Shorts. A former referee, he was also a darts enthusiast.

Tommy Craig is survived by his wife Iona, daughter Sharine, son Alan and wider family circle.
