Progress on works currently being carried out in Larne town centre has been welcomed by a local councillor.

In a statement, Ulster Unionist councillor Mark McKinty said: “The Larne Public Realm scheme finished a number of months ago, but the weak link in the chain was the poor condition of the roads, particularly Main Street and those connecting to it.

“Even before the end of the investment programme, I was in touch with TransportNI about the importance of bringing the road surfaces to the same standard as the other completed works, and I thank them and council officers for pursuing the matter.

“Our town centres are not only vital parts of our economy, but also provide important socio-cultural and civic spaces for both residents and visitors.

“It is important that they are attractive places to visit, and this resurfacing will help contribute to that. I appreciate the support of businesses in these areas being briefly inconvenienced.

“In recent months, I’ve enthusiastically supported schemes making small improvements to local walkways which provide access to the Main Street from parking and other retail areas.

“Access to the Main Street must be facilitated at all times.

“I am committed to further improve the town centre, particularly mindful of local businesses. I also wish to reaffirm my desire to explore opportunities - including financial - to support those streets like Dunluce Street and Point Street which are important parts of our town centre but which have been excluded from previous regeneration schemes.

“Their success will be to the benefit of the entire town.”
