End of an era for Edenfamily newsagent's

D&J Neill Newsagent will pull down the shutters after 45 years.

Proprietor Davy and his wife Jacqueline took over the outlet 32 years ago from his parents John and Evelyn Neill. Previously, the business had been owned by the Cole family.

Davy, who is originally from Sunnylands, admits that it will be a “sad day” when the shop closes but he says that he is looking forward to his retirement.

He regularly works a 60 hour week and has not had a day off since June 2014.

He says he will not miss the early starts, at 6.15 am daily, seven days a week.

He has even opened the shop on Christmas Day.

“In the end, it got very busy. People were coming in for gas and electricity cards. People are always forgetting something.

“But all good things come to an end.

“The kids will be sad because they liked to come in at the end of the week for the one pound mix and now they won’t be able to get that.”

This week, he said he will be “tying up the loose ends” before the door closes for the final time.

Davy noted that he and Jacqueline are now looking forward to a well-earned rest starting with a long overdue trip to Portugal.

He says that they would like to thank everyone who has supported the newsagents for their custom over the years.

One customer indicated that he will remember the shop fondly saying: “I am so sad to see this shop go as it was the first shop I went to when I was a child.”

Davy added: “The Neill family appreciate everyone who has been going to the shop over the years and will be sad to see it close.

“It is still for sale if there is anyone interested.”
