A Greenisland healthcare worker has vowed to practice what he preaches with a mammoth 160-mile cycle in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support.
Pharmacist Alan Erwin will undertake the charity challenge next week with the dual aim of raising funds and promoting a healthier lifestyle.
Setting out from Belfast on Monday, the journey will take Alan along the coastal route from Belfast to Londonderry.
“I want to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support and raise awareness of the benefits of regular exercise and maintaining a sensible weight, which can reduce the risk of certain types of cancer,” said Alan, who works for Alliance Boots in Belfast.
“As a pharmacist, a key part of our role is empowering our patients to make healthy decisions for themselves. Until recently I had not undertaken significant levels of exercise, and had not cycled since I was a child. I realised this had to change, and as a healthcare professional I had to ‘practice what I preached’ so to speak. I am keen to show my patients and others that it is possible to find time to improve your health, even when time appears at a premium.”
