CARRICK's Veterans' Week events concluded with the annual commemoration of the Battle of the Somme at Knockagh on Sunday.
Several hundred people gathered at the County Antrim War Memorial in a solemn act of remembrance.

The salute was taken by the Queen's official representative, Joan Christie, the Lord-Lieutenant of Co Antrim.

Also present were civic representatives from across the county and Royal British Legion members.

The Mayor of Carrick, Alderman Patricia McKinney, was among those who laid a wreath at the monument.

The traditional two-minute silence was also observed at the commemoration, one of a number recalling the thousands of soldiers from the 36th (Ulster) Division and comrades from the 16th (Irish) Division who died fighting between July 1 and November 13 1916 in the fateful battle.

The previous evening, Veterans’ Day ended with the Beating of the Retreat at the harbour car park.

Earlier in the day, visiting Chelsea Pensioners took pride of place in a parade.
