A CARRICK-BASED charity has received a boost following the Tall Ships Festival.
Belfast Lough Sailiability was presented with £5,000 after a gala event in Belfast related to the maritime celebration.
The donation was courtesy of local companies and Belfast Harbour customers who attended a special fundraiser held during the festival in August.
Bill Foster, the outgoing Chairman of Belfast Lough Sailability, said: "The arrival of the Tall Ships put a huge focus on sailing and all that it has to offer. Belfast Lough Sailability operates a number of vessels including a specially adapted dingy which is custom built for disabled people who are new to sailing.
"The funds raised from the evening will go towards ongoing maintenance and new equipment, and hopefully providing opportunities for people who were inspired to sail by the Tall Ships."
The event, hosted by Belfast Harbour in association with the Ireland Funds, featured musician Peter Corry and comedian Sean Crummey. Over 170 guests attended.
Also benefitting was PeacePlayers International which received $25,000. It is a sporting-based cross-community group which also operates in South Africa, Cyprus and the Middle East.
Len O Hagan, Chairman of Belfast Harbour, said: "The Tall Ships Festival was one of the largest events to take place in Northern Ireland's history and was the ideal backdrop for a gala charity event. We had a terrific evening in the Harbour Office and we're very grateful to our guests who gave so generously to two very worthy local charities."
The Ireland Funds, which helped organize the event, is an international charitable organisation that operates in 11 countries. To date it has raised over $300 million for worthy causes across the island.
