SENT to 19 North Street this week was a notice that Whitehead Library had closed on Saturday 27 June for a week before be reopening at Whitehead Community Centre due to renovation
The reason was to let as many users know as possible so that it does not prove too disruptive to them.
Will the library service be issuing an overdue (by a week) fine to itself?
Own goal
FURTHER to the recent Fergus Files item on football no longer being a "male preserve", the latest IFA Disciplinary Committee suspension list makes interesting reading.
Of the seven people named, five are from the one team, Portadown Integrated Ladies - two are players and three are male officials!
Don't hang up
just yet
AN elected representative might be Keen to know he is in for a busy day on the phone.
Apparently his daughter rings him every time he appears in your favourite family newspaper.
That'll be two calls today, sorry, including this, three.
Chaos theory
A PARTY colleague of the above, who is no stranger to this column, is making a welcome come-back.
However, it may be time to ditch the 'Captain Chaos' moniker.
Famous for his windscreen smashing exploit with a golf ball on a council trip to the USA, the Almost Very Important Citizen's name recently appeared as the winner of the Captain's Prize at a local golf tournament.
Cutting edge
UNDERLINING her credentials for the top job was a Very Important Citizen.
Invited to help perform the honours at the official opening of new business premises, the guest rummaged through her handbag before producing a pair of scissors to cut the ribbon.
Wonder what happens when a boat is being launched.
Geography lesson
NOT so well prepared, it would appear, is the younger generation.
Correspondence to your favourite family newspaper arrived with the bold claim: "Irish youngsters are clueless to where the top British holiday locations are."
Cornwall is in Scotland, the Lake District is in Midlands, Blackpool is located in the South West of England and Alton Towers is situated in the South East of England according a new kids' holiday report.
A hotel chain surveyed 2,500 children aged between eight to sixteen years old to investigate their holiday plans for summer 2009. Findings revealed the traditional seaside jaunt is back in fashion, with 33% of kids living in Northern Ireland reporting they are taking a beach holiday this summer. Ten per cent of ramblers reported they were having a rural break in the British countryside. Twenty two per cent of thrill-seekers said they were going on a theme park inspired holiday in England and 26% of culture vultures reported they where taking a UK city break.
The children were also asked the whereabouts of some of the top ten holiday locations they were planning to visit this summer. Findings revealed 46% of Irish youngsters have no idea where Cornwall is, they think it's in Scotland and 72% of children don't know where the Lake District is – they think it's in the Midlands or Wales. Other key findings revealed:
70% of respondents were unsure of the location of Alton Towers in Staffordshire
57% of young people did not know where Bournemouth was
57% of children were baffled by the location of Blackpool
57% of kids were mystified by the locality of Devon.
Now, without getting too defensive on behalf of the young, perhaps had they been asked to locate W5, the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum, Bangor or Newcastle...
